Pouring ICF Walls — Critical Tips

  1. Brace adequately. Forms must withstand the hydraulic pressure of wet concrete. Most blowouts happen at corners — overdo the corner bracing.
  2. Pour in 4-foot lifts. Don't pour the full 8-foot wall at once. Pour, wait 30-60 minutes, then continue. Reduces pressure on forms.
  3. Use a small line pump. Direct pouring from a truck creates too much velocity. A line pump lets you place concrete gently.
  4. Vibrate appropriately. Use a small "stinger" vibrator at rebar locations. Over-vibration causes foam form damage and segregation.
  5. Have extra concrete on standby. ICF pours are time-sensitive. Calculate +15% rather than the usual +10%.
